GUIDE TO ROME, all the best of the ethernal city

Rome, the eternal city full of secrets and wonders, the one to visit at least once in a lifetime. Rome is a magic city that will conquer instantly your heart, and not so much for the wonderful architecture it has to show including one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Colosseum, but in general the whole atmosphere that lingers in the air.

Live it fully, and between a visit to museum and a monument, do not forget to stroll through the small alleyways of the old town, to stop for a coffee in a small square listening to the old Italian songs of street artists and early in the morning head to an orchard-fruit market and speak a bit with sellers learning a few words in Roman dialect.

Here for you a little photo diary from our recent trip to Rome in collaboration with Bijou Brigitte and best places you must visit while you are in town, touristic and other more secret that only locals know. Where to find the best pasta in Rome and one of the most ancient cafes if the world!

Touristic places to visit in Rome:

Campo de’ Fiori – it’s a very picturesque square with a daily market and a strong roman atmosphere.

Piazza Navona – it’s one of the most beautiful squares of the city with Chiesa di Sant’Agnese and the famous Fountain of four rivers by Bernini with a very interesting story behind.

Fontana di Trevi – this fountain will leave you speechless in front of its beauty. The place is always full of tourists, every day and every time of the day, but there are a couple of tricks to get that perfect shot without a crowd around. Take the steps down to the fountain, there is always less people there, even less if you go to the sides of the fountain ( the view is anyway amazing ). At the end don’t forget to trow a coin into the fountain over your left shoulder and to make a wish to come back soon.

Pantheonan imposing monument dedicated to the ancient deities. At the center of the dome there is a hole, according to legend, the rain does not fall inside the monument because of air turbulence.

Colosseo and Foro Romano – probably the reason why you came to Rome.

Altare della patria / Vittoriano – a gorgous monument you will find on the way to Colosseo.

Castello Sant’Angelo e il ponte Vittorio Emanuele II – a walk around this area is must, then continue in the direction of Vatican.

Piazza di Spagna & scalinata di Trinità dei monti – go on the top of the steps before the sunset and watch the sun goes down over the city.

Secret places of Rome:

Trastevere – one of the most charming districts of the city. The best it’s to go in the morning and see the quartier slowly waking up.

Piazza della Pietra – it’s in the historic center but luckily never full of tourists. Stop at Gran Caffe La Caffettiera for a capuccino and cornetto alla marmellata ( jam, it’s divine!)

Orto Botanico di Roma – it’s litterally a paradise, we spent there more than two hours walking trough the bamboo forrest, the japanese garden and pal fields. The price is 8 euros, but defenitely worth it! The best of course it’s to go in spring ( march/april) to see all the sakuras blooming.

Isola Tiberina – this beautiful island is the best place for a walk on sunset.

Il giardino degli aranci & il buco della serratura – the orange garden is a very nice place for an afternoon reading, there is a gorgeous view over the city too! While the Buco della Serratura is a key ‘s hole of a door next to the Garden of Oranges, from which you can have a stunning photo of San Pietro.

Churches to visit :

Rome has more than 900 churches, there is one or even two in every street of the city center. Take always a 5 min to visit the one you meet on your way, they are all extremely beautiful inside, frequently with incredible paintings or statues or other arts from the most famous artists.

Chiesa di Sant’Agnese – in Piazza Navona

Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi – in Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi (close to Piazza Navona)

Basilica di Sant’Apollinare – Piazza di Sant’Apollinare ( close to Piazza Navona)

Chiesa di Sant’Antonio – via dei portoghesi ( Campo Marzio)

Basilica di Santa Maria –  in Trastevere

Restaurants and Cafes:

Da Fortunata – one of the best carbonara in town! The pasta will be made just in front of your eyes by lovely ladies. Campo de’ Fiori.

La Scala in Trastevere – very cute restaurant with delicious antipasti and spectacular carciofo alla romana.

Pompi – best tiramisu in Rome.

Caffe Greco – one of the oldest cafes in the world, with more than 250 years of activity. The inside of the bar is full of paintings and actually it’s the biggest private art gallery open to public.

Gran Caffe La Caffettiera – this bar in Piazza Pietra has a very beautiful position and absolutely amazing croissants with jam!
